ABOUT ROLE:  Reporting to Chief Executive Officer, the Internal Legal Counsel is a member of the Executive Management team and partners with the business, understand its issues and provides viable and tangible legal solutions for commercial transactions, and other matters pertaining to BTL’s legal rights.

 

QUALIFICATION & SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor of Law and Legal Education Certificate.
  • Active license to practice law in Belize.
  • Previous working experience as an Attorney.
  • Experience in a corporate environment and experience with international commercial transactions would be an asset.
  • Must display a cohesive ability at interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and written.
  • Must be able to engage with employees at all levels of the organization and exercise sound judgement.

 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDES BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

Commercial Awareness

  1. Take overall responsibility for all commercial and legal activities relating to the Company’s Interconnection and other Regulatory Obligations including any dispute that may arise with other Licensees.
  2. Execute tasks relating to the Company’s obligations arising from the operation of the Belize Telecommunications Act 2002, the Telecommunication Individual License issued by the Public Utilities Commission (PUC).
  3. Prepare, review, and advise on all the Company’s commercial agreements and/or contracts, national and international.

 

Knowledge of Substantive Law and Legal Procedure

  1. Address matters of general policy relating to Telecommunications, and any other rules or regulations that may be issued by the Public Utilities Commission (PUC).
  2. Conduct timely, comprehensive, and accurate research on regulatory and developmental issues within the telecommunications sector.

 

Planning and Organizing Work

  1. Direct and oversee all aspects of the Legal Department inclusive of people management responsibilities.
  2. Oversee the deliverable turnaround time for legal support requests required by various departments.

 

Collaboration

  1. Establish and maintain strong relationships with other heads of department to identify their legal needs.
  2. Provide advice and legal opinions on issues raised by the various departments of the Company.
  3. Provide legal opinions to the Company’s Board of Directors.
